Hello: My name is Richard wells. I have been hearing about this
environment for many years but have never investigated it for myself.
For someone like me who has no idea at all where to go to get started,
how would you suggest I begin learning? My experience with computers has
been diverse with some Linux, but mostly Microsoft Windows and Apple
Macintosh. Please be gentle with a user with absolutely no idea of what
emacspeak is and how to get productive using it.

At first i found emacspeak difficult to configure. I didn't understand that
emacspeak needed to have its speech servers inside the program configured
and that usually there was a file in the home folder that needed to be
there to give configuration information to emacs so emacspeak can perform
its amazing works almost like a magician.
I wish I had a Linux Distribution like SLINT which is a Slackware
distribution that has many screen readers and applications for the visually
handicapped and also many languages.
If I had SLINT I would have been able to start using emacspeak much
earlier. I highly recommend you download and install SLINT. In the
documentation you will find out how to "switch on" emacspeak and after
switching it on, it's configured ready to use! That's important especially
for beginners, because it's all ready, you just have to use the "switch on"
command as described in the SLINT docs.
Since I learned how to compile emacspeak and then configure the speech
servers inside emacspeak, it's easy for me now to install emacspeak on
other distributions like my favorite Debian. But it was a long learning
process for me because I didn't know much.

Do you have emacspeak working?
If not, just install Slint, especially if you are visually impaired.
It's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned.
So much easier than messing with Ubuntu or Debian.
But there are some things that Ubuntu or Debian can do that Slint doesn't
have -
But I'm very impressed with Slint / Slackware - removing and reinstalling a
program has saved me many times from having an unworkable system.
The most recent Slint release is 14.2.1.1.2 (64-bit).
The ISO file slint64-14.2.1.2.iso is not stored here, but in
http://slackware.uk/slint/x86_64/slint-14.2.1/iso/

also install git, mplayer, espeak-ng, tcl, and tclx You might have to
instal tcl-dev* or tclx-dev* if it exists.

now you have two options. Well, you could have more, but I doubt you have
any hardware speech synthesizers. You can use ESpeak, and it works okay,
but doesn't sound great. Or, you can install Voxin, from:
Voxin: Home (oralux.org) <https://voxin.oralux.org/>
It sounds a lot better, and works better with Emacspeak, too. Now, if you
want to use Emacspeak with ESpeak:
make espeak
or with Voxin:
make outloud
Do pay attention to any error messages you get during any of these steps.
If it says you don't have something, like:
make: GCC: command not found
install GCC like:
sudo apt install gcc
also it's a good idea to have the command-not-found package:
sudo apt install command-not-found
Now, install nano:
sudo apt install nano
and do
nano ~/.emacs.el
and paste, or write, the following, using the call to the speech server
you're going to use:
(load-file "~/emacspeak/lisp/emacspeak-setup.el")

I have Voxin on that ubuntu laptop, but if I get into too much trouble
trying to install emacs, I may give up and go for slint. I hope I can
get my Voxin installed on slint and working if I have to go that route.

But Slint has it already configured and it works out of the box as they say.
EMACSPEAK INSTALLER FROM ORALUX - MISSING ON THE WEB - BUT I HAVE A
GOOD LINK HERE.
Also - as I'm sure you know, Gilles from Oralux has a wonderful
emacspeak installer which has unfortunately been removed from the
Oralux archive, but I still have the file and I give a link to my copy
of the file here:

I used that script file to install emacspeak flawlessly in Debian and
Arch Linux - Slint as I mentioned already has emacspeak installed and
configured.
I know how - NOW - after making lots of errors - know how to install
emacspeak but for a non-programmer, it is very difficult at first, and
much of the documentation is old, and I didn't know and perhaps others
don't know that many helpful files are inside the emacspeak tar.gz
file, when I found those it was like a treasure chest of pure gold.
I just received an email today asking how to get emacspeak to download
mail, and I still haven't figured that out even after 15 years. I
don't rely 100% on emacspeak because I still have some vision, so when
trying to configure emacspeak to receive my gmail, I just use mutt
with a screen reader.
I've tried using eww inside of emacspeak with very little success and
the configuration of gnus is (frankly) beyond me so far. I am self
educated in computers and I find some are inconsistent in their
explanations which leads me to make errors. Now I know that all
system-wide commands have to be made as root, but at first I didn't
understand that it was always so. Also many programmers just shift
gears between user commands and administrator commands without
mentioning the shift of user privileges, all the programmers know what
they mean, but not the poor struggling users. Then some don't observe
good writing practices by putting command strings inside quotation
marks. Like issue this command "sudo make install" to make it easier
for less educated but struggling to understand persons more help by
being crystal clear and understandable. It's very difficult to
remember when teaching violin to always say "now pick up the bow" when
nearly all accomplished violin players know that nearly always comes
first before any execution of playing. But not all of us know all
these things. I have learned these things by teaching others some
things that I am an expert in to others who wish to learn. I did not
realize that I was shifting lanes of the highway without signaling
before one of my students told me, for which I am forever grateful.

Hello,
I am sorry for reviving a very old thread, but I am responding to this
for reference.
I followed all the steps suggested by Devin, It did get my emacspeak
set up, but the voice I get with outloud is extremely raspy, and it is
totally illegible.
However the voxin in orca seems to be working fine.
I am using Ubuntu 22.04 in vmware on a windows 11 laptop.
Could you please advise?

Hi. So, I am not using ubuntu, but I followed your instructions and
got no errors, but when I run emacs, I get process speaker not
running. I have voxin working under orca, but not under emacspeak.

sudo apt install nano
and do
nano ~/.emacs.el
and paste, or write, the following, using the call to the speech server
you're going to use:
(load-file "~/emacspeak/lisp/emacspeak-setup.el")
;; If you're using ESpeak:
;; (espeak)
;; If you're using Voxin:
(outloud)
If you don't git clone stuff into the root of your home directory, which
you shouldn't do as I do because it can get messy if you let it, do change
the load path to wherever you cloned Emacspeak.
The call to the speech server is a hack and Doctor Raman may have a good 16
reasons not to do this, but it works, and I don't have to fiddle with
.profile, .bash_profile, .bashrc, .shrc, .rc, or any other file to get
Emacs working with Emacspeak.
Now, save your .emacs.el file, which Emacs loads when it starts, by
pressing Control o, then Enter, then Control x. Now, you should be back at
a shell, so try running Emacs by typing
emacs
and pressing Enter. Let us know if it works.

Sounds like you need to make the shared library used by the outloud
server. Go into the servers/linux-outloud directory and type make. If it
builds without errors, then try running ./outloud in the servers
directory. If that works, then you should be set to go.

Well, I am making progress for some reason on my system the library
needed to be in /usr/lib64 -- a gentoo special. However, now it says
no language found. I reinstalled voxin upgrading to a newer version,
so everything should be up to date.
