Getting Started
by Richard Wells
Hello: My name is Richard wells. I have been hearing about this
environment for many years but have never investigated it for myself.
For someone like me who has no idea at all where to go to get started,
how would you suggest I begin learning? My experience with computers has
been diverse with some Linux, but mostly Microsoft Windows and Apple
Macintosh. Please be gentle with a user with absolutely no idea of what
emacspeak is and how to get productive using it.

Mac OS Monterey upgrade causes emacspeak to not load
by Jeff Dittel
Hello,
My name is Jeff Dittel and I use emacspeak everyday on my job as a senior software engineer. I have a serious problem because emacspeak is no longer working.
I recently upgraded my Mac to Monterey 12.31, and when I start emacs the init.el file crashes at the line:
(load-file "~/Sources/emacspeak-master/emacspeak-master/lisp/emacspeak-setup.el”)
The “emacs —debug-init” command gives the following output:
File Edit Options Buffers Tools Debugger Help
|Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "Buffer *scratch* has no process")
| process-send-string(nil "tts_sync_state all 0 0 1 100 \n")

Can someone help fix the emacspeak-setup.el file?
Thanks,
Jeff

Multilingual Speech Support
by Hendursaga
Dear Emacspeakers,
I'm aware of multispeech[1], which uses language detection to switch languages / voices, but I haven't tested it just yet. I'm wondering, should I desire to NOT use multispeech, for whatever reason, where I should hook / advice into so that dtk-set-language is called whenever whatever is being spoken is a different language. I'm thinking of some buffer-local variable that I could, say, manually set that that hook could read.
Any ideas?

problem using customization buffer with emacspeak
by John Covici
Hi. If I am in a customization buffer and get to a point where it
says value menu and I then press enter, emacspeak just says Choice:
. How do I read the actual choices? I did try c-e followed by a
digit, but no joy doing that. The keystrokes c-e-c-p and c-e-c-n says
undefined. I am on a Mac using Monterey 12.3.1.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Emacspeak error in evil-mode
by Tim Cross
Hi Raman,
This is an odd one which I only just noticed. Not sure exactly when this
started.
When moving around by character in evil-mode, the character under point
is spoken multiple times - usually 4 or 3 times. Other movement does not seem to be affected.
Character echo when typing is not affected. Only occurs when in either
normal mode or visual mode and only when moving by character i.e. h or l
or using the arrow keys. Moving by words, sentences, etc does not seem
to be affected.
Ive confirmed this in a vanilla emacs with only emacspeak and evil-mode
loaded.
This is with current Emacs 28.0.50 built today and emacspeak also built
from today. Evil mode loaded from nongnu elpa using package.el.
I suspect this is from a recent change. Anything you can think of which
might have changed recently in this area to help me narrow down the
search?

a couple of possibly basic questions about emacspeak on the mac
by John Covici
Hi. I have some questions about emacspeak, I am running a Macbook pro
2016 with 16G of ram and Monterey 12.3.1. Now when running emacs 28.1
and emacspeak, if the speech server on the mac has to say a single
character, either when I type it myself, or using the right arrow key,
it says it at a high rate of speed, much higher than when it reads
lines or words, etc. I have my rate set to 320, so I would like to
hear single characters at the same speed.
I have installed emacs macport from macports, any way to silence vo
when I am in that application? I saw a post a while ago to install
something from homebrew, but I am using macports and am not sure I can
have both at the same time.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Deleting text
by Jeff Dittel
Hey guys,
It is so great to have emacspeak running again. Anyway, running the latest version I cannot seem to delete a marked block of text. I can kill it to the kill ring, but sometimes I would like to just be able to delete it and not send it to the kill ring. The backspace nor delete button works. After marking a block of text hitting backspace just deletes the character. Is this normal default behavior?
Thanks,
Jeff

Change of Speech Rate in Elfeed
by Ishe Chinyoka
Hi,
In Elfeed, Emacspeak adjusts its rate when I press the Right arrow over
an article for filtering it. This happens just the first time after
getting into Elfeed. For instance, the rate would be twice as fast that
I may not be able to hear what it says. My solution is to press C-e dd
to bring up the Speech server dialog. From there, I pick another
speech. I wonder if this is only happening to me, or it is some bug.
I am running the Voxin, American-English voice. I am running Emacspeak
from Git.
TIA,

Bug in emacspeak-vertico
by Tim Cross
Hi Raman,
just a heads up that it looks like a recent update to vertico has broken
emacspeak-vertico.
With new version of vertico, you get a wrong type argument being thrown
from vertico--exhibit. I only had a quick look at it and I *think* the
problem is that the way vertico is using the variable vertico--base may
have changed. The vertico--base variable is now a prefix string, but the
emacspeak defadvice looks like it expects it to be an index value and
attempts to use it as the FROM argument in the call to substring. This
generates a wrong type argument. Likely a simple fix, but wasn't sure
how you would like to progress. I'm guessing the idea is to strip off
any prefix text so that only the last part of the candidate is actually
spoken, but wasn't 100% on this, so thought I'd just leave it to you.
